Łukasz Albrecht, PhD
Lodz University of TechnologyAwarded the Medal of the Young Scientist on 22 March 2016 for the development of new methods of synthesis of biologically important compounds with the use of chiral organic catalysts.
Łukasz Albrecht was born in 1980 in Łódź, where he graduated from the 21st High School in 1999, and then began studies at the Faculty of Chemistry of Lodz University of Technology. He completed a five-year master's degree in the field of Chemistry of Biologically Important Compounds in 2004 as part of an individual course of study. In the last year he was awarded a scholarship by the Minister of National Education and Sport for special achievements in science. In the same year he started doctoral studies at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Technical University of Lodz. During the course, he was awarded the 1st degree prize in the competition for the best presentation of the scientific achievements of the students of the 3rd year of PhD studies at the Faculty of Chemistry of Lodz University of Technology and a beneficiary of the "WIDDOK Support Mechanism for Innovative Activity of PhD Students" programme. His doctoral dissertation, defended with distinction in 2009 (promoter: Prof. Henryk Krawczyk), was awarded with prestigious prizes: the Prime Minister's Award and the Sigma-Aldrich Company and Polish Chemical Society Award.
After defending his doctorate, Łukasz Albrecht became a scholarship holder of the Foundation for Polish Science (KOLUMB program - grants for foreign postdoctoral fellowships). The grant allowed him to start a postdoctoral fellowship in the research team of Professor Karl Anker Jørgensen at Aarhus University (Denmark), which lasted over three years. In 2013, he returned to the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Technical University of Lodz, where he started to create a new research team dealing with the subject of asymmetric catalysis using surgical organic catalysts. This was possible thanks to obtaining funding under the Leader of The National Centre for Research and Development programme.
In 2015, he obtained a PhD degree in chemical sciences. Scientific research of the team of Dr. Lukasz Albrecht is connected with one of the most important current trends in contemporary organic chemistry, i.e. asymmetric catalysis. The conducted research concerns the synthesis and use of catalysts with a strictly defined spatial structure. The team deals with their design, modification and use in the synthesis of biologically important compounds. The developed solutions can serve as innovative tools for the preparation of new drugs, pesticides and other organic compounds of high utilitarian significance.
Dr. Łukasz Albrecht is co-author of more than 50 publications in ISI Master Journal List magazines and several chapters in books. Moreover, he is a laureate of many awards, including: the scholarship of the Minister of Science and Higher Education for Outstanding Young Scientists, the finalist of the 14th edition of the Scientific Awards of Polityka magazine, the winner of the Scientific Award of the Mieczysław Mąkosz Foundation for Supporting Young Scientists and the Award for Outstanding Achievements Contributing to the Development of Science for Young Scientists Working in the Łódź Province.
