TOPTECHNIKA symposium, 12.12.2024

Professor Jerzy Rużyłło from Penn State University will give a lecture entitled "Semiconductor Engineering Over the Years".

TOPTECHNIKA - a series of symposia organised by the Centre for Advanced Studies at the Warsaw University of Technology. The aim of the event is to introduce the academic community to the latest technological developments through presentations by eminent scientists - practitioners from renowned institutions and companies. The symposia include lectures and a discussion forum.

Semiconductor engineering is a technical domain having a major impact on the growth of our technical civilization. In this presentation semiconductor engineering is considered as a technical domain encompassing semiconductor materials and devices, advanced methods of semiconductor device manufacturing, as well as methods used to characterize semiconductor materials and to monitor semiconductor device manufacturing processes. The goal of this presentation is to discuss outlined above key issues involved in semiconductor engineering, to follow their evolution during the recent years, and to share with the audience thoughts concerning possible direction of their evolution in the future.

Professor Jerzy Rużyłło graduated from the Department of Electronics of the Warsaw University of Technology where he also obtained Ph.D. and D.Sc. (habilitation) degrees. From 1971 to 1984 he worked at WUT’s Institute of Electron Technology (currently Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics) where in 1981-1984 he held the position of a Deputy Director in charge of the scientific affairs. From 1973 to 1975 he was a scholar of the Japanese Ministry of Education working as a Visiting Researcher at Tohoku University.

In 1984 Professor Rużyłło accepted position of an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Penn State University in the United States. During his tenure at Penn State, he was involved in research and teaching in broadly understood semiconductor engineering. Prof. Rużyłło retired from Penn State in 2019 as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus.

Professor Rużyłło authored three books related to the topic of this presentation. He also served as a consultant to various companies developing equipment used in the manufacture and characterization of semiconductor materials and devices in the United States and in France. He is a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society and Life Fellow of IEEE. In 2003 he was granted by the President of Poland a title of Professor and in 2024 a title of Honorary Professor of the Warsaw University of Technology was bestowed upon him by the President of WUT.
