Symposium on Interdisciplinary Physics in Economic and Social Sciences

In February 2017 the SFINKS Symposium took place, under the patronage of the Centre for Advanced Studies.

Katarzyna Szymielewicz (President of the Panoptykon Foundation), Edwin Bendyk (Polityka and Collegium Civitas) and Dr. Marek Gągolewski (IBS PAN and MiNI WUT) were invited to this year's debate. During the panel discussion "Responsibility in Science of the 21st Century", the challenges and responsibilities of young researchers of large data sets were discussed, as well as the impact of efficient algorithms of data analysis on  human life.

In accordance with the spirit of SFINKS, the topics covered a broad spectrum of issues: from strictly physical issues such as the Ising model and reaction-diffusion processes, through word analysis, modelling the popularity of tweets, spreading rumours and hate content on the Internet, to explaining why atrial fibrillation is a social problem.

During the SFINKS symposium, dedicated to young scientists studying complex systems, a competition for the best presentations was held. By voting, all participants selected the most interesting presentations in doctoral and student panels. Book awards for the winners were funded by the Centre for Advanced Studies at the Warsaw University of Technology.

The laureates of the competition in the student category were: Patryk Bojarski, Faculty of Physics, Warsaw University of Technology; Łukasz Gajewski, Faculty of Physics, Warsaw University of Technology and Agnieszka Geras, Faculty of Mathematics and Information Sciences, Warsaw University of Technology. In the doctoral category: Mateusz Wilenski, Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw; Tomasz Raducha, Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw and ex aequo Iga Grzegorczyk and Katarzyna Stępień, Faculty of Physics, Warsaw University of Technology.
