The Meetings of Open Minds II, 26.10.2017

The second event of the "Meetings of Open Minds" series titled "Open mind of science XIX and XX century", organized in the headquarters of CAS, was dedicated to Marian Smoluchowski, a brilliant Polish physicist, on the occasion of the celebration of his 100th anniversary of death.

The meeting was attended among others by Prof. Stanislaw Janeczko director of CAS, Prof. Piotr Przybyłowicz, Prof. Mirosław Karpierz - Dean of the Faculty of Physics WUT, Prof. Leon Gradoń, Prof. Tomasz Woliński, Prof. Jerzy Garbarczyk and special guest professor Bogdan Cichocki from the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Warsaw. The theme of the meeting was Marian Smoluchowski's life and scientific achievements like researching how the case appears in the deterministic world, his extremely important impact in "bringing on atoms to life" or recognition of their reality, and also in solving the puzzle of blue sky color.

The "Meetings of Open Minds" was preceded by Colloquium Lecture “About Marian Smoluchowski on the 100th anniversary of his death" at the Physics Auditorium in the Faculty of Physics Building, delivered by Professor Bogdan Cichocki*. The lecture was inaugurated by Prof. Mirosław Karpierz, Dean of the Faculty of Physics WUT and Prof. Stanisław Janeczko, Director of the Center for Advanced Studies WUT. Professor Bogdan Cichocki presented the biography,  scientific achievements and life passions of Marian Smoluchowski, who was one of the most outstanding scientists at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, co-creator of the kinetic theory of matter and also an outstanding mountaineer. Marian Smoluchowski died prematurely on September 5th, 1917 at the age of only 45. The lecture was finished with a discussion with the speaker.

*Prof. Bogdan Cichocki works at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Warsaw. His field of scientific activity is statistical physics, the aim of which is to derive the laws of the world around us from the laws relating to the world of atoms.
