TOPTECHNIKA - Challenges encountered in introducing artificial intelligence into medical devices - Jerzy Orkiszewski, 21.03.2024

Jerzy Orkiszewski was born and raised in Poland. He studied at the Department of Precision Mechanics at Warsaw University of Technology (now the Department of Mechatronics) and at the École Nationale Supérieure de l'Electronique et de ses Application in Cergy, France. After defending his master's thesis at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, he continued his studies at the PW doctoral program. Since 1989, he has lived in the United States, dividing his time between California and Arizona. In Silicon Valley, he worked for laser medical device design companies such as Cutera, Inc., Ellex Medical, Lumenis, Inc. and Medical Group of Coherent, Inc. where he held high-level engineering, management and managerial positions. He is the author of a number of patents in the field of laser applications and electromagnetic wave generating devices in medicine, with a particular focus on ophthalmology and dermatology. In 1998, he co-founded Cutera. Inc. a company that designs and manufactures medical lasers for dermatology and listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange. At Cutera, Jerzy Orkiszewski holds the position of vice president of engineering. In this role, he focuses on introducing new technologies such as AI and image-guided therapy into the company's products. Since 2005, Jerzy Orkiszewski has served as president of the US-Polish Trade Council (USPTC), a non-governmental organization based in Silicon Valley and focused on building relationships in the areas of technology, biotechnology and education between companies and universities of Poland and the United States. In its activities, the USPTC works closely with universities, businesses and government structures of both countries.
In 2015, Jerzy Orkiszewski was included in the Golden Book of alumni of the Warsaw University of Technology.
He is also an experienced pilot and a regular correspondent of the monthly Aviation Review magazine. In the US, he conducts seminars for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He is married; both his wife and daughter are practicing physicians in the US. He is passionate about classical music, especially classical guitar.

The speaker will discuss the problems encountered in incorporating AI solutions into therapeutic medical devices. A novel medical laser designed to treat a range of dermatological conditions will be used as an example. The process of defining the system's functions, selecting AI technology and implementing it in the device will be presented. In particular, problems will be discussed:
- technical
- selection of material for learning the model
- selection of methods of user interaction with the device
- lack of regulation by government agencies
- verification of the correctness of the model
- legal The lecture is based on the actual design process currently taking place in the US. Many of the questions raised in the lecture do not yet have clear answers. Finding solutions to the problems of applying this novel technology to therapeutic devices is an interdisciplinary task for the coming years.
