Colloquium Lecture WUT "My adventure with science", Prof. Marek Konarzewski, 24.11.2022

Professor Marek Konarzewski graduated in biology from the Bialystok Branch of Warsaw University. In 1990 he defended his doctorate. In 1996 he habilitated on the basis of his work Allocation of energy to growth and respiration in avian postembryonic development. In 2004, he received the title of professor of biological sciences.

He is a professor at the Department of Evolutionary and Physiological Ecology, Faculty of Biology, University of Bialystok, and at the Faculty of Artes Liberales, University of Warsaw. In 1991-1993 he was a fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he worked with the research team of American biologist Jared M. Diamond. From 2008 to 2013 he was Counselor of Minister for Science and Technology at the Polish Embassy in Washington. From 2017 to 2021, he served as Advisor for Science and Technology to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In October 2022, he was elected by the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences as the new President of the Academy for the 2023-2026 term.

His scientific interests focus on issues at the intersection of evolutionary ecology and physiology of birds and mammals. He is the author or co-author of dozens of scientific publications, numerous popular science articles, the popular science book In the Beginning Was Hunger, two photo albums about the nature of the Biebrza Valley of the Knyszyn Forest, and a translation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Jared M. Diamond, Rifles, Germs, Machines.

Colloquium Lecture will be held on Thursday, November 24, 2022 at 4:15 pm in the Senate Room at Main Building of the WUT.
