Distinction of the Center for Advanced Studies "Pythagorean Universe" Laus tibi, non tuleris qui vincula mente animoque for Professor Ian Stewart from the University of Warwick, 12.04.2018.

On April 12, 2018, for the fourth time, a Distinction of the Center for Advanced Studies, Warsaw University of Technology "Pythagorean Universe“ Laus tibi, non tuleris qui vincula mente animoque (Praise to You for not letting your mind and spirit be bound) was awarded.

The ceremony, organized that day in the Little Hall in the Warsaw University of Technology Main Building, was devoted to the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Center for Advanced Studies. The major point of the ceremony was award a special guest Professor Ian Stewart from the University of Warwick (Great Britain) a Distiction of the Center for Advanced Studies "Pythagorean Universe" and the title of Master of  the Center for Advanced Studies WUT and handing the statuette in the form of a crystal dodacahedron  with a blended outline of Plato’s Academy. The presentation was accompanied by invited guests:  representatives of the University's authorities - Rector of the PW - Prof. Jan Szmidt, Vice-Rector for Science - Prof. Rajmund Bacewicz and Prof. Marianna Jacyna, Prof. Mirosław Karpierz, Prof. Zbigniew Brzózka, Prof. Franciszek Krok, Prof. Józef Lubacz, Prof. Jan Słyk, Deputy Director of the CAS Dr. Piotr Przybyłowicz, Prof of WUT, and external guests, among others: Agnieszka Slósarska (ATDI),Prof.  Zbigniew Marciniak, Prof. Michael Giersig, Prof. Ewa Bartnik, Prof. Jan Piela, Prof. Marek Demiański, Dr. Leszek Mellibruda, Prof. Kazimierz Stępień, Prof. Marek Trippenbach, Prof. Marek Kuś, as well as students and high school students from all over Poland.

After the inauguration of the ceremony by the Director of the Center for Advanced Studies Prof. Stanisław Janeczko, the Rector of the WUT, Prof. Jan Szmidt and former Rector of WUT Prof. Włodzimierz Kurnik gave a speech, emphasizing the special role and values contributed by the Center to the overall mission of the Warsaw University of Technology as a higher education institution. The laudation in honor of the laureate of the Distinction, Prof. Ian Stewart, was delivered by Dr. Krzysztof Ciesielski, a mathematician from the Institute of Mathematics at the Jagiellonian University. The wide range of interests and the comprehensive achievements of Professor Stewart as a scientist, mathematician, popularizer of science and writer, winner of numerous international awards, holder of five honorary titles prove that the outstanding activity of this year's winner perfectly reflects the motto of the award: Laus tibi, non tuleris qui vincula mente animoque (Praise to You for not letting your mind and spirit be bound)The ceremony was enriched by a lecture by Prof. Ian Stewart entitled "How to Tell the Ducks from the Rabbits. Mathematics of Visual Illusions" and a performance of the Polish Flute Quartet with classical works by J.S. Bach, W.A.. Mozart, N. Paganini, E. Bozza.

As a continuation of the 10th anniversary of the Center for Advanced Studies, a symposium "Recognition and Creation in Science and Technology" was held on 13-15 April 2018 in Sterdyń, which honorary guest was Professor Ian Stewart, the winner of the CAS award.
