During the ceremony, the CAS Distinction "Genius Cognitio", for outstanding achievements in science and significant contribution to the formation of the Center for Advanced Studies at the Warsaw University of Technology, will be presented in the form of a statuette, that is a representation of the sculptural group called the Apotheosis of Knowledge, crowning the facade of the Main Building of the Warsaw University of Technology. The award will be presented to two outstanding scientists: Professor Kazimierz Stępnień from the Astronomical Observatory of University of Warsaw and Professor Mina Teicher from Bar-Ilan University in Israel. The laureates will deliver lectures: „Waiting for the greatest discovery in human history” by Prof. Kazimierz Stępień and „How does the brain work?” by Prof. Mina Teicher. The celebration will begin with speeches by the Rector of the Warsaw University of Technology, Professor Krzysztof Zaremba, and Professor Marek Konarzewski, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The meeting will also be highlighted by a lecture by the laureate of the WUT Young Scientist Medal, Professor Maciej Wojtkowski of the Polish Academy of Sciences, titled „Seeing the invisible - do we already know everything about the process of seeing?”.
The celebration will be held on May 9, 2023, in the Senate Room of the PW Main Building at 3:15 p.m. The meeting will be accompanied by an exhibition devoted to the activities of the Center for Advanced Studies since its inception.
The idea for the Center was conceived as early as 2000, with the first offer of lectures at the advanced level, aimed at PhD students. However, officially the Center for Advanced Studies WUT was established on I February 2008 by virtue of the Warsaw University of Technology Rector’s Order. The primary objective of the Unit is multidisciplinarity and multidimensionality of the undertaken activities, with a view to raising the level of scientific research and the quality of education at master's and doctoral studies. As a non-faculty unit, the Center provides a unique platform for the organization of a broad educational offer, based on interdisciplinary lectures, symposia, workshops and many other initiatives, that could not be held effectively elsewhere at the University - due to structural and thematic constraints of the faculties.
The center creates a friendly space for the integration of the various faculties of the Warsaw University of Technology within the framework of jointly implemented activities. It brings together distinguished Professors, young academic staff and ambitious, University's most talented doctoral students. The staff of the Center consists of scientists from the best Polish and foreign hubs, presenting non-standard, interdisciplinary approach to the transferred knowledge with a view to activating potential of young minds.
Thanks to this, a creative and intellectual exchange is being carried out between generations and different academic communities, leading to innovative research solutions and learning about the complexity of scientific issues of an interdisciplinary nature.
